Marzetti Appoints Mark Carter to Bolster Supply Chain Leadership

The specialty food maker names Schwan veteran Mark Carter as Chief Supply Chain Officer to advance network simplification and productivity gains.

Marzetti Bolsters Supply Chain with Strategic Leadership Appointment

The Marzetti Company, a prominent specialty food maker, has announced the appointment of Mark Carter as its new Chief Supply Chain Officer (CSCO), effective July 13. This pivotal executive move underscores the company's commitment to enhancing its supply chain resilience and operational efficiency in today's dynamic retail landscape.

Carter's leadership is expected to drive the ongoing efforts to simplify Marzetti's extensive network and achieve significant productivity gains. These strategic initiatives are vital for meeting evolving consumer demands within the omnichannel retail environment.

A Veteran Leader for Supply Chain Transformation

Mark Carter steps into the CSCO role with a robust background in global supply chain management, poised to oversee Marzetti’s entire supply chain organization. His mandate includes advancing the company's growth strategy through optimized logistics and streamlined operations.

Marzetti President and CEO Dave Ciesinski praised Carter, noting his "deep factory-based operational expertise combined with broad enterprise-level supply chain leadership." This expertise is crucial as companies navigate complex global supply chains and digital transformation.

Extensive Industry Experience Fuels Strategic Direction

Prior to joining Marzetti, Carter served as Executive Vice President and Chief Supply Chain Officer for Schwan, a major frozen food manufacturer. In this role, he managed the supply chain across 18 manufacturing sites, demonstrating comprehensive capabilities in large-scale logistics solutions.

His impressive 18-year tenure at Unilever further cemented his expertise, where he held various executive positions including Senior Vice President of Supply Chain for the North America ice cream business. Carter’s extensive experience aligns with the need for strong leadership in sophisticated consumer goods supply chains.

Marzetti's Evolving Network and Operational Goals

Carter’s appointment comes as Marzetti continues to refine its manufacturing network and enhance operational capabilities. Over the past two years, the company has actively optimized its infrastructure to support efficient production and distribution.

In February 2025, Marzetti acquired an Atlanta-based sauce and dressing production facility, which significantly boosted efficiency and incremental capacity. This expansion aligns with a broader industry trend toward strategic network optimization to serve a growing omnichannel customer base. Concurrently, the company also closed a sauce and dressing production facility in Milpitas, California, reflecting a focused approach to operational consolidation and geographic alignment.

The Broader Impact on Retail and Logistics

Executive appointments like Carter’s highlight the increasing importance of sophisticated supply chain leadership across the retail and consumer packaged goods sectors. Companies are investing heavily in talent and technology to manage complex global operations and deliver seamless customer experiences. This focus on efficiency and strategic oversight is critical for any business operating within the modern omnichannel retail ecosystem.

The emphasis on simplifying networks and achieving productivity gains through strong leadership demonstrates a commitment to long-term sustainable growth. Such strategic hires are becoming a key competitive differentiator for businesses looking to navigate market volatility and enhance their value proposition.
