Wayfair and Google Team Up to Power AI Commerce with UCP

Wayfair partners with Google to co‑develop the Universal Commerce Protocol, enabling seamless AI‑powered shopping and checkout experiences across platforms.

Wayfair Partners with Google on Next‑Gen AI Shopping Tools

Wayfair Inc. has announced a strategic collaboration with Google to co‑develop the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)—an open standard designed to make AI‑powered e‑commerce more seamless, secure, and user‑friendly.

As a foundational partner on this initiative, Wayfair is helping shape the future of how shoppers discover and buy products online, particularly through AI platforms like Google’s AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app.

According to Wayfair CTO Fiona Tan, the company is investing in AI‑powered discovery wherever customers are—whether that is on its own app or across external AI platforms. UCP serves as a common language between AI shopping agents and retailers, bridging the gap between product discovery and checkout—while ensuring Wayfair remains the merchant of record to protect pricing, fulfillment, and customer support.

What the Universal Commerce Protocol Means

The Universal Commerce Protocol is a new open‑source standard developed with Google and co‑partners including Shopify, Etsy, Target, and Walmart. It’s intended to allow AI agents—software capable of interacting with users and systems autonomously—to seamlessly communicate with retail platforms through every phase of the shopping journey, from browse and discovery through checkout and post‑purchase activities.

By standardizing these interactions, UCP eliminates the need for custom integrations between every platform and AI service, making it easier for retailers like Wayfair to connect with multiple AI‑driven channels without repeated engineering work.

AI‑Driven Checkout and Seamless Buying Experiences

One of the first major applications of the partnership will be a new checkout experience powered by UCP on eligible Google product listings in AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app. Shoppers will soon be able to complete purchases from Wayfair directly while browsing within Google’s AI environments—without having to switch over to Wayfair’s own app or website.

This capability is significant because it allows Wayfair to meet consumers where they are exploring products with AI assistance, streamlining the path from product discovery to purchase—an increasingly important aspect of modern online shopping.

Why This Matters for Wayfair and Customers

For Wayfair, one of the nation’s largest online home goods retailers, this collaboration advances its long‑term goal of making discovery more intuitive and personalized. The company has already been investing in AI‑driven tools—like its Muse tool and the Discover tab in its app—to help customers refine style preferences and find products more efficiently, and UCP expands that effort to the broader AI commerce ecosystem.

From a customer perspective, the partnership promises:

  • Faster, more natural shopping experiences powered by AI
  • Checkout without app or site transitions
  • Consistent pricing, fulfillment, and service through Wayfair even when purchasing through third‑party platforms
  • Discovery tools that adapt to preferences and context across devices and interfaces

Competition and the Future of AI Commerce

The move comes amid a broader industry shift toward agentic commerce, where conversational AI tools don’t just recommend products but can take action—like completing purchases—on behalf of users. Google’s UCP competes with other emerging standards, such as OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol, as tech giants and retailers race to define the future of AI‑powered shopping.

By aligning with open protocols like UCP, Wayfair is positioning itself at the forefront of this transformation—aiming to make AI‑driven shopping experiences more reliable and scalable for both customers and retailers.
