UNFI Boosts Supply Chain Performance with Lean Daily Management

UNFI’s expanded lean daily management rollout has improved throughput, on‑time deliveries and reduced shrink across its distribution centers, reinforcing its supply chain performance goals.

United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) is driving measurable improvements in its supply chain through the expanded rollout of lean daily management practices, a standardized operational model designed to enhance efficiency, delivery and cost performance across its distribution network.

This initiative is part of UNFI’s broader effort to strengthen service levels and operational discipline in a challenging wholesale grocery environment.

Lean Daily Management Expands Across Distribution Centers

In 2025, UNFI implemented its lean daily management model at 34 of its 49 distribution centers, embedding a continuous improvement mindset that prioritizes daily reviews of key operational metrics such as safety, quality, delivery and cost.

According to company leadership, this structured approach has helped frontline teams identify and resolve issues more rapidly, improving throughput and overall performance.

Operational Gains from Standardized Practices

Early results from the lean rollout include:

  • ~9% increase in throughput—boosting how many cases move through facilities.
  • ~3% rise in on‑time deliveries, strengthening reliability for customers.
  • ~16% reduction in shrink, lowering wasted inventory and loss.
  • Projected reduction in operating expenses as a share of net sales.

UNFI executives emphasize that lean daily management also contributes to a better work environment and helps limit associate turnover by empowering teams with clear performance data and decision‑making authority.

Part of Broader Supply Chain Strategy

The lean initiative complements other supply chain improvements at UNFI, including network optimization, automation investments, and digital tools designed to improve fill rates, delivery performance and inventory accuracy.

Lean practices also support the company’s goal of creating what it describes as the “distribution center of the future,” combining people, process and technology to deliver more reliable service and operational excellence.
