GameStop to Shutter 470 Stores Nationwide by End of January

GameStop will close 470 U.S. stores by the end of January, impacting major states including New York, California, and Texas.

Video game retailer GameStop plans to close approximately 470 stores across the United States by the end of January 2026, according to reporting by FOX Business. The latest round of closures is part of the company’s ongoing effort to streamline operations and cut costs amid shifting consumer behavior and mounting financial pressure.

Among the hardest-hit states are New York, where 30 stores will close, as well as California, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Texas. GameStop has not yet disclosed a full list of affected locations, nor whether employees at shuttered stores will be reassigned or laid off.

The retailer has struggled in recent years to regain profitability as the gaming industry increasingly pivots toward digital downloads and e-commerce platforms. GameStop has previously stated that store closures are part of a broader transformation strategy aimed at focusing on more profitable locations and enhancing its digital capabilities.

The move comes after a turbulent period for GameStop marked by executive shakeups, shifting business models, and fluctuating stock performance driven in part by its meme stock status.

As the company prepares for earnings season and a pivotal 2026, further details on GameStop’s restructuring plan are expected to emerge.
